President's Message

David R. Doering, IFA

Greetings to My Fellow Appraisal Professionals-

As I anticipated in my last President’s letter, this is turning out to be a very busy year for our profession and for NAIFA. And as is most always the case, a lot of what I consider to be good things have happened or are in the process of happening because of all the hard work of our NAIFA chapters, NAIFA state organizations and our NAIFA national committees and task groups.

As I reach the mid-point of my term as President of NAIFA, I remain truly honored by the trust our members have placed in me and our leadership team in working to overcome the challenges we face. Yet even under these circumstances, I continue to feel the excitement of the possibilities before us as a profession. I thought this letter would be a good chance for me to share with you some of the things that have taken place and some information on what we are going to be working on in the next several months. Here are a few:

51stAnnual New Jersey Educational Conference

In March, I was pleased to be able to attend the 51stAnnual NAIFA New Jersey Educational Conference. I must say that our New Jersey NAIFA members know how to put on a great conference. In addition to having two days of continuing educations, the conference offered NAIFA members and non-members the opportunity to network and discuss issues relating to legislation being considered in their state and region. My thanks go out to the conference organizers and chapter members for making me feel so welcomed.

NAIFA Spring Board of Directors Meeting

Immediately preceding the New Jersey NAIFA Educational Conference, we held the Spring NAIFA Board of Directors meeting. I am sure by now that most, if not all, of you are aware that the NAIFA Board of Directors voted overwhelmingly to move forward with the finalization of a plan of merger with the American Society of Appraisers (ASA). Some of you may also know that NAIFA and ASA have been discussing this possibility for the past ten years. However, due to the hard work of a joint task force, our two organizations have developed what I believe is a mutually beneficial plan that will serve to preserve and support the hard-earned NAIFA designations of our members as well as creating expanded opportunities by joining together the strengths of our two organizations. The final step in this process is to present the plan of merger to our membership for final vote. Designated members will be receiving more information on the ratification voting in the next 30 days.

Proposed NAIFA – ASA Merger

As our membership numbers over the past several years will attest, like most professional real estate appraiser organizations, NAIFA’s membership is declining due in part to natural attrition as well as to what seems to be a lesser interest of the newer and younger members in our profession to participate in professional appraisal organizations.

While ASA has also been affected by these trends to some extent, it remains very viable from a financial standpoint and benefits from the diversity of its multiple appraisal disciplines to support its activities and management. In addition, ASA has a strong national presence due to being in our Nation’s Capital and by having an on-staff Director of Government Relations who is regularly representing our profession on Capitol Hill and before the myriad of governmental regulatory agencies. For the past several years, NAIFA has had a cooperative arrangement with ASA which has allowed us to take advantage of the benefit of the ASA’s national presence and to speak as a unified voice on many major issues.

NAIFA continues to be strong with respect to providing timely and relevant professional continuing education for practicing appraisers and remains a voice for appraisers both at the state and national levels. Consequently, the proposed merger of NAIFA and ASA can best be classified as the bringing together of the strengths of two organizations resulting in enhanced benefits for our combined membership.

Reaching Out to the Membership

I believe that good decisions are made based upon having good information. To that end, the Officers and Board of Directors are committed to reaching out to our membership in attempt to cover all the questions and concerns that some may have. Even though the members of the NAIFA – ASA task force who worked on the details of the proposed merger have spent endless hours attempting to anticipate and address these possible issues we know that there are likely other questions that our members may have.To provide the most complete information as possible the Board committed to doing several things to ensure that member questions are addressed.

NAIFA Updated Website

First, if you have not done so, I encourage you to check out NAIFA’s updated website. We felt it was time for an overhaul which, in addition to making it generally more user friendly, gave us the perfect opportunity to make information about the merger readily accessible to members. Members will be able to view the Memorandum of Understanding document that spells out the essential elements of the proposed merger. In addition, we have posted Frequently Asked Questions relating to the proposed merger and their answers. The FAQ’s will be a living document that will be updated as we receive questions not previously addressed.

In addition, this is a great opportunity to welcome NAIFA's new marekting coordinator, Lauren Checea. Lauren brings to our organization a strong background in marketing and communications and should be a great addition to our national staff as we continue to reach out to members to keep them informed.

On June 19th, NAIFA hosted a webinar to outline the rationale leading up to the Memorandum of Understanding approved by the Board and the anticipated benefits of the proposed merger. If you missed the presentation, a link is available to members on the website, viewable at your convenience.

Meeting with Chapters

Several Board Members and Officers on the task force have and will be meeting with local chapters to answer any questions their members may have as well as to address any specific questions relating to changes to chapter governance and structure in the event of merger. To date, these presentations have resulted in the good and frank sharing of information and concerns and have been well received. We will continue to reach out to chapters wanting to include a presentation on the agenda for an upcoming meeting. If you or your chapter would be interested, please feel free to contact me or our National Office staff so that we can see about working out the logistics.

NAIFA 2017 National Conference
