NAIFA's designation program was formed, in part, to provide assurance to clients that they are engaging a qualified, experienced, competent appraiser, an appraiser having up-to-date education and knowledge of the profession's standards.
The National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers, a founding member of The Appraisal Foundation, awards its designations to appraiser Members who have successfully met its rigorous requirements. NAIFA offers four designation types (click on any designation to see its requirements):
Receiving your designation is a multi-step process. Each designation type follows the same basic steps:
When we receive your completed ERF, we will send it to the Admissions Committee for approval. The Committee may approve it right away or they may request additional information. If additional information is requested, we will send you an e-mail informing you of the Committee's request. If your ERF is approved without any additional information required, we will send you an e-mail letting you know. We will also include the guides for the two types of Demonstration Reports we accept: expanded form and narrative.
Once your ERF is approved, you will have two years to complete your Demonstration Report, which can be either a narrative report
or an expanded form report
. If you request a mentor at this step, we will work to find you one. However, due to demand, at times a volunteer mentor is not available.
When your Demonstration Report is complete, submit a PDF copy to firstname.lastname@example.org
– hard copies will not be accepted – and a payment of $250 to cover the requisite fees. If you are already designated and are receiving an additional designation, you are only required to pay the $150 grading fee.
A grader will be assigned to your Demonstration Report and he or she will have one month to grade the report. If you receive a passing grade, we will notify you via e-mail that day, your membership will be changed to the appropriate designation type, and we will send your designation packet, which includes the designation certificate and designation pin.
If you do not receive a passing grade, we will notify you via e-mail and return your grading sheet, which will indicate changes you need to make to your Demonstration Report to receive a passing grade. Once you have made these changes, you can resubmit your Demonstration Report to email@example.com. The same grader will grade your revised report. Once your Demonstration Report receives a passing grade, we will notify you via e-mail that day, your membership will be changed to the appropriate designation type, and we will send your designation packet, which includes the designation certificate and designation pin.
If your NAIFA designation has been lapsed for more than one year, the Admissions Committee must approve your reinstatement. To apply to have your designation reinstated, please complete the designation reinstatement form and send to firstname.lastname@example.org. All sections of the form are required and it must be typed. Forms that are not typed will be returned.
